Resource and Information

  • In general, coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has been mostly a mild disease in children that can be managed at home.
  • At this point, any healthy person, including a child who has a fever, cough, sore throat or mild respiratory symptoms should be advised to self-isolate at home.
  • Self-isolation at home includes staying home and focusing on hygiene and social distancing. Here is concrete guidance to give families.
The American Academy of Pediatrics generally recommends keeping children out of the health care system. The Johns Hopkins Health System, including Johns Hopkins Children’s Center, has greatly expanded its  telemedicine capabilities to protect patients and staff members.

Ibuprofen vs Tylenol in times of COVID-19

With COVID information flying fast and furious, it is important to turn to sources you can trust, like your Pediatrician .
Information from France is suggesting that Ibuprofen may not be best for those with coronavirus infection.  This information is anecdotal and has not been supported by any other country, even those with more experience with coronavirus such as China and Italy.

So what should you do?

Remember why we give fever-reducers.  We give them so children can be comfortable enough to drink and sleep.  If Tylenol gives your child significant comfort, then stick to Tylenol.  If Tylenol does not allow your child to drink or sleep, then please give Ibuprofen (Motrin or Advil). Fever is not the enemy. The real risk of dehydration is a more significant factor than a possible risk from Motrin.

And once again, please remember that children with coronavirus are not getting very sick.

What Our Patients Are Saying

"It is extremely rare, at least in my experience, to have a doctor come in, look me in the face, shake my hand, offer their name and ask for mine. She handled my child with great care and attention, careful not to scare her as she was already irritable from being in the doctor's office in the first place. She explained everything very carefully and gave me tips on how to get my daughter to take her oral antibiotics. She made a follow up call the same day with the lab results and explained my daughter's diagnosis. I really appreciate that she is involved and engaging. She was friendly and I'm glad I made her my daughter's primary care physician.."
